Silver Cord Program
With an emphasis to “Pay It Forward” and to volunteer time to help those in need, North Butler High School is launching a Silver Cord Program. This program recognizes students on graduation day for their volunteerism in the community. This is an optional program that is available for all students.

The total number of volunteer hours required for the Silver Cord is 200. Each graduating class will have a different colored one-page form to fill out, which are available outside the counseling office. Deadline for submission of hours will be May 10 of the student’s graduation year.
Criteria

Group activities should be supervised
-
Activities performed during the school day are not permissible
-
Individual activities should not be court ordered, for school misconduct, or for class
-
Activities should not be for pay
-
Activities must be documented
-
Hours count from the end of 8th grade (starts June 1) through May 10, including summer hours
-
No more than 50% of hours can come from one organization
-
Parents cannot sign form, unless they are the direct supervisor of an approved activity
-
Hours must be submitted for approval within 3 months of their completion, unless otherwise approved by Mrs. Clark.
What type of Hours Count? Examples include:

Tutoring, but not during school day or for pay
-
Club Service Hours (FFA, 4-H, Student Council, Youth Group, Science Club,
Scouts – except those required for a badge
or Eagle project, NHS – except individual service project hours)

Raking and Shoveling of snow, etc., as long as not being paid
-
Helping a person in need – cleaning, painting, mowing, shopping, etc.

Most church activities should count (choir in church, Sunday School, Bible School –
except those required for confirmation)

Fundraiser (NBFOM Fair Stand, North Butler Booster Club, Food Bank, etc)
-
Community and school cleanup
-
Campaign and political activity
-
Public Library story time
-
Sporting event activity as long as you are not in the sport (concession stand)

Nursing home and day care facility - must be organized; must be pre-approved by
facility

What Does Not Count? Examples include:

Anything done during the school day
-
Anything to do with family
-
Baby/dog sitting for individuals (except for unpaid activities such as PT Conferences)

School activities such as sale of prom fundraisers and homecoming events

Choir practices and other practices
-
Anything performed during school hours
-
Fundraising for yourself
-
Hours required for: NHS Individual Service Projects, Scout Badges, Eagle Scout Projects, Confirmation hours
